Top Free VPNs (and VPNs with Free Trials)

Here are the top choices for free VPNs, some which come with a free trial.

NordVPN is one of the most highly rated VPNs available today. Technically, it’s not a best free VPN except for the free trial week, but you can use the trial to determine if NordVPN is the right service for you.

NordVPN supports 5376 servers in 61 countries, so it’s your best option if you travel a lot or need to see media from different locations. The VPN allows you to use six devices, and the software is easy to download and install. Use this VPN with Macs, iPhones, (and all iOS devices), Androids, and Windows.

Nord has servers in China and the Middle East, areas with strict rules regarding the internet. All indications show that NordVPN works well at cloaking the servers and allowing smooth connections.

Speed is important, especially when you stream music or movies. NordVPN is faster than 70 percent of other VPN providers, according to one expert test. Choose a server location close to you if you need high speed and smooth connections without buffering.

SmartPlay technology is implemented by default in all NordVPN apps so that you can enjoy safe streaming experience with no buffering, bandwidth throttling or slow connections speeds.

Nord can be used with all three popular security protocols -  PTTP, OpenVPN and L2PT, but you can also use proxy servers, which are included in the download packet. Virus and malware-blocking CyberSec is also part of the Nord's security features.

There's an automatic kill switch to block the device or prevent some programs from connecting to the internet if they're outside the secure VPN channel. Combine NordVPN with the Onion network for even more security. There's DNS leak protection if an unencrypted activity is sent outside a VPN tunnel.

NordVPN won’t work in China, but it will work in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and other countries with strict media censorship.

Use live chat, email or the FAQ on the Nord VPN website if you have a problem. This VPN provider has 24/7 support. NordVPN received the Best Customer Service Award from BestVPN in 2018. For more information on this stellar VPN service read this full review.

What is a VPN?

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, adds extra security to your home internet or public WiFi HotSpots. Businesses use VPNs to protect important data, but many individuals now use VPNs to guard their internet transactions and browsing from hackers.

A VPN replaces the user’s IP address with one from its servers. You can use an IP address from New York if you live in London, for example.

Here are a few reasons you might want to use a VPN:

  • To hide your IP address
  • Better encryption for increased security
  • Hide and replace your geographic location
  • Access blocked websites
  • Prevent hacking

Corporations use VPNs with advanced security and encryption tools to prevent hacking. VPNs use highly secure tunneling techniques to safeguard data against Firesheep and WiFi Spoofing. VPNs are preferred over proxies for businesses since all data is protected.

It's easy to set up an account and get started with a VPN. Sign up with a user name or email address, and your Smartphone or computer can configure VPNs using PPTP or another protocol.

All computers will easily configure a PPTP connection for a Virtual Private Network. You’ll need to use certificate download for L2TP/IPsec protocol, and Open VPN requires an open source application.

VPN Protocols

The most common protocols are PPTP, L2TP/IPsec, and Open VPN.

Open VPN is SSL-based, open source and available from many websites. Flexible OpenVPN runs on a TCP or UDP port and provides high-grade encryption.

L2TP/IPsec offers more features than PPTP, but it's not as advanced as OpenVPN. The combination of two protocols gives you better protection against hackers and interruptions. IPsec creates a secure channel while L2TP provides a tunnel.

You can set up PTTP on any operating system. PTTP sends, or tunnels, a point-to-point connection over a protocol named generic routing encapsulation (GRE). This protocol has been around since Windows 95, and although it's secure, you can use better safer options.

What You Should Know about Free VPNs

There are advantages and disadvantages to having a free VPN. The most obvious advantage is the fact that it's free, so you don't need to worry about recurring monthly charges on your credit card.

You'll also be able to sample the service and cancel it if you don't like it without wasting any money. You can upgrade to a paid version in many cases if you like the service.

Make sure that you are careful with free or cheap VPN services. Some of them, like Hoxx gives your information over to third party organizations, while other's do a decent job like Touch VPN.

VPNs offer privacy and allow you to watch sports or entertainment events from around the world. Accessing anonymous torrents and geo-blocked websites are sought-after features of Virtual Private Networking sites.

Free VPN networks often have lots of advertising clogging up pages. The provider still needs to make money, and if they can’t do that through fees, they’ll use ads or sell your data to marketing firms. Be aware of this before signing up for a free service.

It’s easy to turn your computer or phone into a private VPN device for internet browsing. Choose the VPN you want. Sign up and download the software for your platform. Install the software on your device and then select your protocol and server location. You’ve now spoofed your location to keep your real location and browsing private.

Free VPNs for Android and iPhone

With a few exceptions, you can download the best VPN for iOS and Android phones. Make sure you choose a provider that has one or more premium plans so you can upgrade at any time.

Choose your free VPN provider carefully if you browse the internet and stream daily on your phone. All devices need excellent privacy protection, but it’s especially important for SmartPhones.

Torrent music, movies and TV shows with a free or paid VPN. Unlimited bandwidth and data are best for uninterrupted torrenting, and only a few free VPNs can provide this feature. You’ll also benefit from peer-to-peer connections if you want to torrent a lot of content.
